Prix d'Honneur: "Flight of the Phoenix" Parish of St Clement
The Battle of Flowers in 1998 was another beautiful day and a spectacular carnival. It lived up to it's expectations with more than 30,000 spectators and participants attending a memorable day. For many it was just an enjoyable day out, but for others it was the culmination of months of planning and hard work. The competition among exhibitors was intense and, just by the neck, the Parish of St. Clement beat the Parish of St. Martin to win the major prize, the Prix d'Honneur.
The great thing about the Battle of Flowers is that there are plenty of prizes for exhibits of all shapes and sizes. Last years 'Best Two-Dimensional Set Piece' and 'Best Costumed' awards both went to Grouville's 'Monster House Party'. The Jersey Young Farmers Club won the prize for the top senior youth club entry with their exhibit: 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines', a 40ft long exhibit themed on the 1910 London to Paris air race based on the film of the same name.
Grouville's Monster House Party scooped both the 'Best Two-Dimensional Set Piece' and 'Best Costumed' awards.
The Prix d'Honneur de Papier was won by Battle stalwarts Nigel Gates and Friends with 'Empire of the Sun' followed by another keen Battle supporter, Nance Hicklin with 'Sakura' which won the Prix d'Excellence de Papier.
