They say that it never rains on Battle day, but, for a brief few minutes
they were proved wrong this year by a sudden and torrential downpour. It did
nothing to dampen spirits, however, and the ensuing sun soon dried out the
costumes and the spectators, and everyone was treated to a parade of colour
and design, amongst the twenty-four participating floats, that was the best
yet. This year's experiment of a one-pass parade seemed to be well-accepted.
The floats could also be seen on static display either in the Lower Park or
the Waterfront Roof garden, with special Battle walks arranged around them.
Another innovation this year was the commissioning of 'Battle Lines', a film
compiled from archive footage of former Battles and Tourism promotional films,
and screened all week at Cine World. This year's Miss Battle was Sophie Chaopradith
who, with her Maid of Honour, Lucy Mason, brought extra grace and charm to
both Parades.
