After almost 65 years, one of jersey’s Battle of Flowers ‘traditions’ is coming to an end. The title ‘Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers’ is being replaced and instead organisers are looking for a ‘Jersey Battle of Flowers Ambassador’ and a consort, roles which will be open to both female and male entrants for the first time.
In recent years there has been a steady decline in the number of female entrants entering the Miss Battle of Flowers competition together with a misguided opinion that the event is merely a ‘beauty competition’. Public feedback has also requested that the role be more inclusive and opened up to both females and males.
Explaining the decision to change the title, Events Director for Jersey Battle of Flowers, Jackie Donald, says, “To better reflect this ambassadorial role we took the decision to change the title from ‘Miss Battle of Flowers’ and become more inclusive; therefore opening it up to a potentially larger number of people who would like this experience. This is a fantastic opportunity for any young Jersey person, regardless of gender to undertake this high-profile role and enjoy a memorable year. The Ambassador will meet and engage with a large number of the community, attend events on behalf of Battle of Flowers both on and off-Island and of course lead the Parades both this summer and at Christmas”.
The Ambassador role is open to any young person between the ages of 17 and 25 years who have been ordinarily resident in Jersey for at least two years. Anyone considering entering the competition should have a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for meeting people, a passion for their Island and importantly for the Jersey Battle of Flowers. The title holder (and his/her consort) must be available during summer 2018 and have no major commitments planned for August as they will be expected to attend a high number of events leading up to Battle Day.
A junior ambassador role is also being created, replacing the former ‘Miss Junior’ title. This will also be open to any Jersey female or male between the ages of 8 and 12 years old inclusive. Although the title holder will not be expected to undertake as many engagements as the main Ambassador he or she will take part in the August and Christmas Parades.
The two competitions will take place at the Jersey Arts Centre on the evening of Sunday 17 June 2018 and anyone interested in entering must obtain an entry form in advance by emailing email@example.com no later than Saturday 26 May. As in previous years any ‘Miss Parish representative will automatically gain entry into the final competition if she wishes but must obtain an entry form in advance. Should organisers receive a large number of entries then a short-list of competitors, based on their application will be made and invited to take part in the competition.
